Will Senator Clinton End The Problem Of Health Insurance For Those With Pre-existing Conditions?
With the Presidential Election in full swing it is no surprise to discover that health care and in particular health insurance is at the head of the agenda and, for tens of thousands of people, the potential for finding an answer to the problem of low cost health insurance for people suffering from pre-existing conditions could make Senator Clinton's plan an attractive choice. But is it likely to work?
As with the majority of plans it sounds great and promises to offer a range of new options for individuals who currently have insurance coverage and also for the 47 million Americans who are presently without any form of insurance coverage. In addition, it promises to cut your premiums and give you increased security of cover. For people suffering from pre-existing conditions it promises to "end discrimination based on pre-existing conditions or expectations of illness".
Hillary Clinton's plan to meet America's health insurance requirements calls upon providers to work with employers and patients to provide a high standard of health care at an affordable price and also calls on government to implement reforms to the health care system to both increase the quality of care and reduce costs.
This of course is just what we all want to see but if it were that easy why is the health care system today in such a mess and why are costs continuing to rise rather than decreasing?
The simple fact is that this is merely the latest in a growing list of plans to reform the health care system and is pie in the sky. In effect it is nothing more than a political proposal that is extremely well written and excellently presented and will no doubt to a certain extent achieve its objective, which is quite simply to win votes. It will not however do anything to improve health insurance because it is simple does not address real world issues.
Today health insurance is big business and it has little to do with providing health care and a great deal to do with making profits for the insurance companies. Now you can of course talk to the providers until you are blue in the face but, unless the government is prepared to throw money at the problem then costs will go on increasing.
Anyone who has experience of private medical treatment overseas will know very well that much of the cost of providing care at home represents profits for the insurer and not the actual cost of providing care. You have only to seek major medical treatment in any of the many wonderful hospitals in the Far East for example to know that you can get the highest quality of care at a fraction of the cost of providing that same treatment in the United States. And if you believe that the standard of treatment overseas is not as good as it is in the US then think again because a substantial number of the hospitals in the Far East are staffed by highly qualified surgeons and doctors and have some of the most up-to-date equipment you will find anywhere in the world.
It is all very well to talk about working with the insurers to reduce costs but the simple fact of the matter is that it is not in their interests to do so. Costs will stay high and indeed will continue to rise until the US government takes over the responsibility for the provision of the mainstay of health care in the United States.
