Post Holiday Stress

During the days that lead up to Christmas, there is a level of adrenaline that keeps us going. Good cheer is all around and we have constant reminders of how we are supposed to give and gracefully receive. Now, the hustle and bustle of the Holidays is passing, and the real stress is lurking around the corner.

The house needs to be cleaned, decorations put away, and returns, if any, need to be made. All these chores are added to our return to work and daily responsibilities. The level of work has remained or increased, but the cheer and excitement of Christmas is gone. Here are a few tips to help you stay motivated through the next few weeks:

1. Make a list and check it twice. List out all the things that need to be done and add them one by one to the calendar. Spreading them out over a couple of weeks will help ease the burden.

2. Delegate. If you have a significant other or children, get them to share in the work load. Do not stress over perfection. Welcome their help and praise their efforts.

3. Take time out. Treat yourself to a warm bath or hot cup of tea and a good book. Find at least 30 minutes of down time per day.

4. Exercise. Make an effort to get in a little exercise each day. Even if it is a short walk. The endorphins from the exercise will help keep you going and ward off stressful blow ups.

Many people are feeling a relief that the Holidays are over, while at the same time are overwhelmed. Recognize that you are not alone. You do not have to accomplish everything in one day. Follow the tips above and you will find that the next few weeks will not be so bad. When it is all over, toast a glass of wine to your own efforts and enjoy the coming year.
