How To Choose The Right College Student Health Insurance
If you're considering college student health insurance, then you should realize that there are a variety of different options that you can choose from. Of course, how much you'll pay in premiums for your health insurance will depend on many different factors -- some that are within your control, and some that are not. Perhaps the most influential factors are age and medical history.
There is one thing you need to know about student health insurance -- usually it will be less expensive than if you went with a commercial insurance provider. This is because a college student generally does not file as many claims as someone who is part of the general population. Also, these health plans are not a permanent thing, so because they are only used for a short period of time, they will usually be less expensive.
Unfortunately, health insurance for college students also has its drawbacks. For one, you will probably not enjoy as much coverage as you would if you had purchased a policy from a commercial insurance company. However, this is usually not such a consideration because students are not likely to be subjected to most of the medical problems that they won't be covered for under student policies.
If cost is a huge consideration, you may have to look into a publicly funded health program for your insurance coverage. Some people can qualify for health programs that will be fully covered by public funds, while others will be able to qualify for less expensive alternatives than if they were to get their policy directly from their college.
In some instances, plans can be purchased at a discount if you belong to certain organizations. At the very least, they will offer you a different alternative than the standard options. For example, those that are part of fraternities and sororities, professional organizations and honor societies are going to have more options than those who are not.
Graduate students probably have the toughest time when it comes to college student health insurance. Usually these policies will be more expensive, as most plans are aimed at undergraduates who are 25 years old or younger.
