Dealing With the Stress of the Holiday Season

The Christmas season is approaching quickly and there are a ton of things that need to be done, most of which cost money. You are already short on time and money and on top of all of that you still need to deal with your everyday life. You are stressed out because you are not sure how you will ever be able to accomplish it all. So, how do you eliminate some of this stress?

Organization and planning ahead are two ways in which you can greatly reduce the amount of stress that the Christmas season brings with it. We all know that Christmas comes on the same day every year and we all know what is expected on that day. Yet most of us put off what needs to be done until the very last minute, at which point we drive ourselves insane trying to get it all done. Throw an unexpected event into the mix and you have a disaster on your hands.

Here are few ideas that might help. Before you go Christmas shopping, sit down and make a list of everyone you want to buy a gift for and what gift you would like to get them. By creating a gift list you will save a lot of time when you do go shopping because you will know exactly what you need so you can get in and out of the stores quickly. Lists also help you determine approximately how much your gifts will cost you.

If you have a lot of people to buy for, spread your Christmas shopping out a bit. Do not try to do it all at one time. It is easier on the wallet if you spend less over several trips. It also makes you feel as if you are spending less (thus reducing the stress level a bit) because you are not shelling out a large amount of cash at one time. You can also save a lot of money by taking advantage of Black Friday (the day after Thanksgiving) sales. You can find some amazing deals on Black Friday that you will not see any other time of the year. Lastly, start shopping early. Do not wait until October or November to start your shopping. Buy a few things here and there throughout the year and before you know it your Christmas shopping is done and you are not stressing out because you waited until the last minute.

If it is your turn to host the annual family Christmas dinner, make sure you plan ahead for that also. Plan a menu for the food that you will be serving. Once you plan the menu, make a list of every single ingredient that you will need. Check your cupboards and cross off those ingredients that you do not need to get. By doing this you will not find yourself needing something you thought you had when you really did not. If you want to lessen the burden of preparing all of the food, have your friends and family help you prepare the food or request that each person or family bring a dish to pass. Not only will this reduce your stress level, it will save you a lot of time.

Christmas time is supposed to be a fun, happy time of year. By organizing and planning ahead it still can be. You will never eliminate all of the stress brought on by the Christmas season but you can significantly reduce it.
